Common CPAP Cleaning Mistakes — and Why a Dirty Machine Matters

The most common CPAP cleaning mistakes, why a dirty machine is a real hygiene concern, and a simple cleaning routine.

A CPAP mask, hose, and humidifier chamber are in close contact with your airway every night, which makes cleaning routine rather than optional. This guide covers the most common mistakes people make, and what a simple routine looks like.

Why it matters

A CPAP machine that isn't cleaned regularly can build up moisture, oils from skin contact, and dust — a combination that can support bacterial or mould growth over time. This is a general hygiene concern with any equipment that touches your airway repeatedly, not a CPAP-specific medical claim — it's the same reason you'd clean any reusable mask or tubing that touches your face daily.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the humidifier chamber. Standing water sitting in a warm chamber for days is one of the easiest ways for buildup to start. The chamber should be emptied and rinsed regularly, not just topped up.
  • Using tap water long-term in the humidifier where distilled or clean water is recommended by the manufacturer, which can lead to mineral buildup.
  • Not replacing filters on schedule. A clogged filter restricts airflow and stops doing its job — see disposable vs. reusable CPAP filters.
  • Washing mask cushions with harsh soap or hot water, which can degrade the silicone faster than mild soap and lukewarm water would.
  • Letting parts air-dry in a closed, damp bathroom rather than somewhere with airflow, which slows drying and can encourage buildup.

A simple routine

  • Daily: wipe down the mask cushion; empty and rinse the humidifier chamber if used.
  • Weekly: wash the mask, tubing, and humidifier chamber with mild soap and water; let everything air-dry fully before reassembling.
  • On the manufacturer's schedule: replace filters and check the mask cushion for wear — see signs you need a new mask cushion.

If your mask smells or the machine seems dirty despite cleaning
